For Puzzles & Survival players who want to clear harder stages and bosses without more power. Checked October 2026.
Short answer: Puzzles & Survival battles are match-3 fights. Match 3 or more tiles under a zombie to hit it, and match 4 or 5 for grenades. Colours counter each other: green beats blue, blue beats red, red beats green, and purple and yellow beat each other. Save hero skills for the boss.

Power matters, but a lot of stages are lost on the board. Players match the wrong colour, burn skills on the first wave and run out before the boss. A few rules fix most of that.
Here is how tile damage, colours, grenades and rage work, and how to use them.
How tile damage works
When you match 3 or more tiles under a zombie, the zombie takes damage (Pocket Gamer). The damage is based on the combined ATK of your heroes that match the tile colour (High Ground Gaming). So if you have no yellow heroes, yellow tiles do next to no damage.
That is why your lineup colours matter as much as their power. A lineup without a colour turns that colour into dead tiles.
Colour counters
| Colour | Name | Strong against | Weak against |
|---|---|---|---|
| Green | Brave | Blue | Red |
| Blue | Calm | Red | Green |
| Red | Rash | Green | Blue |
| Purple | Avid | Yellow | Yellow |
| Yellow | Wary | Purple | Purple |
The Pocket Gamer strategy guide says a counter hit deals an extra 200% damage and a weak matchup cuts damage to 50%. High Ground Gaming adds that purple and yellow resist their own colour, and that the colour rule applies to tile damage and normal attacks, not to hero abilities.
Check the enemy lineup screen before each battle. It shows enemy colours, so you can swap in counters.
Grenades and combos
- Match 4: a frag grenade. It blows up the tiles around it.
- Match 5: a flash grenade. It clears all tiles of that colour.
- Combos add more damage on top.
A flash grenade on your strongest colour is often the best move on the board. Look for 4 and 5 matches before you take an easy 3.
Rage and hero skills
Each hero has a rage gauge that fills when you match tiles of that hero's colour. Tiles that hit nothing give double rage (High Ground Gaming). That means clearing tiles in empty columns is not wasted: it charges skills.
Normal enemies die fast, especially when you match counter colours. Bosses need much more damage. Pocket Gamer advises saving skills for the boss. Fill every gauge on the early waves, then open the boss fight with all of them.
The buff rule most players miss
Only one buff or debuff can affect each stat at a time. The newest one replaces the old one. If two heroes both buff attack, the second skill overwrites the first instead of stacking. Order your skills so a weak buff never replaces a strong one.
Boss fight checklist
- Check the boss colour on the lineup screen.
- Bring at least one strong counter hero.
- Charge all gauges on the early waves.
- Use buffs first, then damage skills.
- Hunt for 4 and 5 matches in your counter colour.
This matters most in Alliance Trial and Special Operations, where rewards depend on the most damage you deal (AppGamer).
Building a lineup for the board
Since tile damage comes from heroes of the matching colour, your lineup decides which tiles are worth matching. Three rules help:
- Cover the counter colour. Before a hard stage, check the enemy lineup and make sure you have a strong hero in the colour that beats it.
- Avoid dead colours on bosses. A tile colour with no hero behind it does almost nothing, so every lineup gap shrinks your board.
- Mix buffs and damage. Buffers like Meyers and Mars help most when their skill fires first, before your damage skills.
Clearing waves fast
On normal waves, match in the counter colour first. Pocket Gamer notes that simple enemies die quickly that way. Use the extra moves to build 4 and 5 matches and fill gauges, so you reach the boss with skills ready and grenades on the board.
For spenders and alliance leaders
- Fill colour gaps before you add power. One good hero in a missing colour can be worth more than levels on a hero you already have. See the hero tier list.
- Damage events reward skill. In Alliance Trial, a member who plays the board well adds more than one who only has power.
- Leaders: pin the colour chart and the buff rule in alliance chat before Alliance Trial.
