For new Puzzles & Survival players and anyone starting on a fresh server. Checked October 2026.
Short answer: In Puzzles & Survival, bind your account first, follow the main chapter missions, use every free recruit, and keep your build and research queues busy. Max other buildings before each HQ upgrade, join an active alliance early, and build one strong hero of each colour instead of many weak ones.

Puzzles & Survival mixes two games. You fight zombies with match-3 puzzles, and you build a base called the Sanctuary on a map full of other players. Most early mistakes come from treating it as only one of the two.
This guide covers your first week: what to do first, how to grow, and what to avoid.
Day one: the setup most players skip
- Bind your account. Link it in the User Center. High Ground Gaming lists not binding as the biggest mistake, because you can lose everything on a reinstall.
- Set your name. You get two free Name Changers at the start.
- Know the reset. The day resets at 00:00 UTC.
- Redeem codes. Our codes list has the current ones. The newest give 300 to 500 Diamonds each.
Follow the main chapter missions
The chapter missions give heroes, resources, speed-ups and EXP (Pocket Gamer). Early tasks include joining an alliance and upgrading buildings. Finishing the tutorial chapters unlocks Nova, who runs the Research Lab.
Grow the Sanctuary the right way
- HQ caps everything. Each HQ level sets the max level of your other buildings. Bring the others up to the cap before you upgrade HQ.
- Fast builds first. Do the quick upgrades first and leave the slowest for last, or for when you go offline.
- Resource buildings and storage. They produce while you are offline. Collect when they are full.
- Never leave a queue empty. Research is the easiest queue to keep busy and usually takes the longest. Start your longest jobs before you close the game.
- An extra build queue lets you build two things at once. It costs Diamonds or real money (Pocket Gamer strategy guide).
Heroes: focus on a few
Noah's Tavern gives free recruits: 5 Basic a day, 1 Intermediate every 24 hours and 1 Advanced every 2 days. Save recruit tokens until you can do a 10x pull, which gives 11 items (BlueStacks).
Do not spread Antiserum over every hero you get. Skip 2-star heroes. Build one strong hero of each colour, then move most resources into your 4-star and 5-star heroes. Our hero tier list shows which ones are worth it.
AP, stamina and daily quests
- AP pays for campaign stages at 20 per attempt. It refills at 1 every 6 minutes and caps at 120, so spend it before it caps.
- Stamina pays for Zombie Lairs, which give Antiserum and chests.
- Daily quests: 150 points opens all five boxes. The first three give 10 AP each.
All three points come from High Ground Gaming.
Join an alliance early
Alliance members can help speed up your builds, training and research for free. Your first alliance join also gives a bonus. If a big active alliance will not take you, join a smaller active one and move up when your power grows. Move your base next to your alliance on the world map.
Shields and safety
You start with a beginner shield. It runs out. Once you have resources worth taking, use a shield before you go offline. Shields cost Diamonds if you do not have one in your Bag.
Seven beginner mistakes
- Not binding the account.
- Missing the daily quest boxes.
- Letting AP and stamina sit at the cap.
- Upgrading HQ before the other buildings are maxed.
- Levelling too many heroes.
- Using hero skills on easy waves instead of saving them for the boss.
- Paying real money to reach 180 daily points. High Ground Gaming says it is only needed for a few events.
Gear, research and Nova
Once the basics run, two buildings matter more than they look. The Research Lab, run by Nova, holds the research tree. The Gear Factory makes Gear, Chips, Modules and Nano Weapons. High Ground Gaming notes that unlocking the Gear Factory makes the 150-point daily quest target easier to reach.
Research works like a skill tree: you finish one branch before the next opens (BlueStacks). The Military and Military II trees raise troop stats like attack and march speed.
Your troops
You train four troop types: Fighter, Shooter, Rider and Vehicle. BlueStacks suggests training a balance of each early on. Shooter beats Rider, Rider beats Fighter and Fighter beats Shooter, which matters most in Commander Duel. Our hero upgrade guide covers how heroes buff troops.
For spenders and alliance leaders
- The best early spend is time, not power. An extra build queue and speed-ups help most in week one, when every hour of building compounds.
- Do not buy every offer you see. Pick one goal for the first month, like a second build queue or one 5-star hero.
- Leaders recruiting new players: send them this page and the codes list. A member who binds the account and keeps queues busy is worth more than one with a big first week.
