Quick answer
A T1 wall in Evony is a huge stack of tier 1 troops, usually mounted, that soaks up hits so the archer march cannot reach your real damage. T1 is the lowest cost per troop, so flat HP refines on your wall general matter most. It fails against siege rallies, so you still need a backline.
For Evony players building a defense keep on a small budget, and for leaders who want trap keeps on the map. Checked October 31, 2026.

Short answer: A T1 wall in Evony is a huge stack of tier 1 troops, usually mounted, that soaks up hits so the archer march cannot reach your real damage. T1 is the lowest cost per troop, so flat HP refines on your wall general matter most. It fails against siege rallies, so you still need a backline.

Walk around any older Evony server and you will find keeps with hundreds of millions of tier 1 troops behind the walls. It looks strange at first. Why train the weakest troop in the game in those numbers?

Because on defense, numbers and flat HP do a job that power alone cannot. This guide explains how the T1 wall works, how traps fit in, what to refine first, and where the plan breaks.

Why a T1 wall works

Battles in Evony follow a targeting order. The NERFPLZ T1 wall guide explains it simply: the most common attack march is ranged, and ranged attackers hit mounted troops first, then archers. While any mounted troops of any tier stand in your castle, your archers are not targeted.

So the T1 cavalry acts as a meat shield. The attacker burns rounds killing troops that cost you very little, while your siege and archers do the real damage from behind.

Why tier 1 and not higher tiers

Base T1 mounted HP is only 400. That sounds useless until you add flat HP from gear and refines. The NERFPLZ guide shows one Courageous Ares Leg Armor piece adding 6,948 flat mounted HP, which it equates to about 1700% of a T1 mounted troop's base HP.

The same flat number added to a T12 troop is a small bump. Added to a T1 troop, it multiplies its toughness many times over. Add the lowest resource cost per troop and you get the most defense per resource spent.

  • T1 costs the least to train, so you can stack huge numbers.
  • Flat HP refines matter more the lower the base stats are.
  • Losses hurt less, because each troop costs so little to replace.

How traps fit in

Traps are a separate layer. The Theria Games trap guide (last updated February 2025) lists four types, each built to counter one troop type:

TrapCounters
StonesRanged troops
Fire ArrowSiege machines
AbatisMounted troops
TrapGround troops

Only a small share of traps fire each round. Theria Games puts the trigger rate at 2% with maxed research, or 2.2% with Leo III and a maxed Ambush skill. A battle has 20 rounds. The useful part: traps that fire are not lost. You only lose as many traps as the enemy troops they kill, so a big trap stack lasts a long time.

Theria Games recommends T1 traps for free and medium spenders, and T8 traps for players who spend much more. That matches the logic of the T1 wall: low-cost numbers first.

What to refine first

  1. Pick one troop type. Refines are limited. NERFPLZ says to focus on one, and most T1 walls use mounted.
  2. Put flat HP on your wall general. Helmet and pants first, flat mounted HP as the main stat.
  3. Do the same on your wall dragon if you have one.
  4. Look at Ares leg armor. NERFPLZ rates it above Achaemenidae armor for this job, because its extra stats outweigh the other set's debuffs.
  5. Add T2 to T5 if you have them. They add more wall time before your backline is reached.

Where the T1 wall fails

NERFPLZ is clear that this is not a bulletproof defense. Know the gaps before you commit:

  • Siege rallies. Siege hits your backline without engaging the wall. Almost every T1 wall falls short here.
  • No backline, no damage. T1 cavalry does little damage except to ground units. You still need siege and archers behind it.
  • Counter troops. Once your backline is gone, the enemy's counter type clears the meat shield fast.

For spenders and alliance leaders

A T1 wall is one of the few Evony plans where a modest budget goes a long way. Where the money helps most:

  1. Gear before troops. Training T1 costs few resources. The hard part is the flat HP gear and refines on the wall general. Put spending into the gear and refine items, not into more troops.
  2. Speedups and resources for the backline. The wall buys time. Your siege and archers still need to be strong enough to punish attackers.
  3. Time it with events. Training and building events reward the same work you would do anyway. Save speedups for those windows.

For leaders: one or two strong trap keeps in the right spots make attackers think twice about your whole area. Ask members who already run walls to share their setups, and keep at least one siege-heavy keep ready for the siege rallies a T1 wall cannot stop. The alliance leader page and our Evony alliance leader guide help with the bigger plan.

FAQ

Is a T1 trap still good in Evony in 2026?
⌄
Yes, for low spenders and dedicated trap keeps. Creators still post T1 trap content in October 2026. It is a defense plan, not a full answer: siege rallies can hit your backline without touching the wall.
Which troop type should a T1 wall use?
⌄
Most guides use T1 mounted, because mounted troops are targeted first and protect your archers while they stand in the castle. Pick one troop type and put all your flat HP refines on it.
How many traps activate in an Evony battle?
⌄
Only a small share. Theria Games puts the maxed research trigger rate at 2%, or 2.2% with Leo III. Traps are only lost when they kill enemy troops, so a big stack lasts a long time.
More Evony credits for the same budget.
Usually 10 to 30% more credits for the same budget. Same packs, bought for you through the official store. You see your exact price in your currency before you pay.
