Quick answer
Evony buffs are mostly percentages that add together, then multiply your troops' base stats. Each buff only works in its context: basic, marching, in-city, defense or reinforcing. Debuffs cut an enemy's buff by at most half. Check your Monarch Details screen and match generals to what they do: attack, defend or reinforce.
For Evony players who want to understand their buffs before they spend on generals, gear or research. Checked October 31, 2026.

Short answer: Evony buffs are mostly percentages that add together, then multiply your troops' base stats. Each buff only works in its context: basic, marching, in-city, defense or reinforcing. Debuffs cut an enemy's buff by at most half. Check your Monarch Details screen and match generals to what they do: attack, defend or reinforce.

Buffs are the most confusing part of Evony. Creators posted several buff videos in late October 2026, with titles about "inconsistent buffs" and "1000 ways to increase your buffs". Players clearly want this explained.

Here are the rules from the most detailed public buff guide, in plain words.

Rule 1: buffs add, then multiply

Percentage buffs from all sources add together. The total multiplies the base stat of your troops:

Final stat = base stat x (total % buff + 100%)

Example from the Evony Guide Wiki: a troop with 220 base attack and a 200% buff ends at 220 x 300% = 660.

Flat buffs (like "+100") are added after the percentage. Defense 100 with +15% and +30 flat ends at 145.

One common mistake: a general's own attack stat is not multiplied by your buffs. The general's stats decide how big the buffs are that the general gives your troops.

Rule 2: every buff has a context

Buff typeWorks whenDoes not work when
BasicAnywhere: marching, in city, reinforcing-
MarchingSolo attacks, starting or joining rallies, defending buildings and campsDefending your own city, reinforcing an ally's city
In-CityDefending your city, your troops reinforcing an ally's cityAt buildings or camps
DefenseDefending your city, defending buildingsCamps
ReinforcingYour troops in an ally's cityRallies, troops sent to your own city

Defense buffs only come from Blazon, Military Academy and Castle Decoration, per the wiki. Joining a rally counts as marching, not reinforcing.

General skills follow the same logic by their wording. "Leading the army to attack" is a marching buff. "Main City Defense General" only works when you defend your own city. "Leading the army to reinforce" is a reinforcing buff. "Launch Alliance War" only works when you start the rally.

Rule 3: debuffs cut buffs, up to half

A debuff lowers the enemy's buff, but never by more than half. With a -300% debuff:

Enemy buffAfter -300% debuff
50%25%
300%150%
600%300%
800%500%

Flat buffs are not affected by debuffs. In rallies and reinforcements, the wiki's tests suggest debuffs do not add up between players; the strongest one appears to apply.

Percentage or flat?

Percentage buffs are better for high-tier troops. Flat buffs help low tiers more. In the wiki's ring example, flat attack beat percentage up to about T11, and percentage won from T12 up. That is why T1 trap players value flat buffs.

Quick check before a big fight

  1. Decide your job: attack, rally, defend your city or reinforce.
  2. Pick a main general whose skills say that job in the condition.
  3. Open Monarch Details and look at the matching total, not the biggest number.
  4. Check your debuffs if you lead rallies. They matter most against stacked walls.
  5. Use temporary attack, defense or HP items only for the fight that counts.

Where buffs come from

Permanent: Duty Officers, Monarch Talent, Culture, Art Treasures, Alliance Science, VIP and City Decorations. Temporary: items, Shrine offerings, battlefield buildings and throne titles. Plus general skills, gear (refined and dragon gear), specialties, research and Subordinate City buffs.

Subordinate City buffs also add up, and that includes cities of the same culture. More cities of one culture means more of that culture's marching buff, per the wiki. That is why big accounts collect subordinate cities with care.

Your Monarch Details screen shows Basic, Marching, In-City and Reinforcing totals. It does not show Defense buffs or general buffs, which is one reason numbers seem "inconsistent".

Attack layering, a more advanced topic, builds on these rules. RedEvony explains it in Evony Attack Layering ADVANCED. See also our PvP attack guide.

For spenders and alliance leaders

Before you spend on a general, read the skill condition. A huge attack buff that only works when you lead the attack is wasted on a player who mostly reinforces. Match spending to the job you do in your alliance.

Leaders: assign roles by buffs, not power. Rally leaders need marching buffs and debuffs. Wall holders need in-city and defense buffs. Reinforcers need reinforcing buffs. Ask members to send you screenshots of their Monarch Details before a Server War.

FAQ

Do Evony buffs stack?
⌄
Yes. Percentage buffs add together. For example +20% from a skill, +10% and +5% from gear and +25% from research make +60%. That total then multiplies your troops' base stats. Flat buffs are added after.
Why does my Evony buff not show in battle?
⌄
Most likely it is the wrong context. A marching buff does not work when you defend your own city, and an in-city buff does not work at a battlefield building. Read the condition on each general skill.
How do debuffs work in Evony?
⌄
Per the Evony Guide Wiki, a debuff can cut an enemy buff by at most half. A -300% debuff takes a 300% buff to 150%, and an 800% buff to 500%. Flat buffs are not affected by debuffs.
More Evony credits for the same budget.
Usually 10 to 30% more credits for the same budget. Same packs, bought for you through the official store. You see your exact price in your currency before you pay.
