Short answer: Evony is pay to win at the top of a server and playable for free below it. Spending buys speed and depth. Per a fan guide the Monarch score chests hold 94,500 gems, about 378 USD at store rates. Alliance teamwork still decides most big battles. Our view: spend on a plan, not on panic.

Every strategy game with packs gets the same question. The answer for Evony depends on where you want to be on your server, so we split it by level.
Our verdict is our own view. The numbers come from the App Store listing and from a fan guide that is not dated, so check your event screen.
What money buys
The App Store listing shows packs from 4.99 USD for 1,000 Gems to 99.99 USD for 25,000 Gems. At store rates that is about 250 Gems per dollar for the larger packs. Pink Gems are called Gems in the store.

Most of what money buys is time. A paying account builds, trains and heals faster.
What the numbers say
Per the onechilledgamer SvS guide, nine Monarch score chests run from 2,250,000 to 540,000,000 points and hold 94,500 gems in total. At about 250 Gems per dollar, that is around 378 USD of store packs. That tells you something. The reward for the very top of a server is worth a lot of money, and the first chests are within reach of an active free account.
The same guide says the Throne needs 9.5 million march power and temples need 5 million. Few accounts have that, and it is the biggest reason Evony is pay to win at the top. If you want to fight for the Throne, you need an account that can lead a rally at that level.
For the alliance side, the fan guide lists Major league as the top 256, Elite as 257 to 1,280 and Junior as 1,281 and below. Junior is open to most alliances. Major is not.
What free players can still do
- Join an active alliance. It is the biggest free boost in the game.
- Use official free rewards. Events and gift codes come first. See our free Pink Gems guide.
- Be reliable. An alliance picks the player who shows up for BoC, not the one with the largest account.
- Learn timing. Free players who save items for the right event get more from them.
Three kinds of player
This is our own view, from how the game is built.
- The casual player. Free is fine. Pick an active alliance, log in daily, claim events. You will not lead a server, but you will have a good time.
- The steady spender. A set monthly budget, spent on a plan, gets you into the middle of the pack and keeps you useful in big battles.
- The server competitor. This player wants the Throne, a Major league alliance or the top Monarch chest. It takes money, a strong roster and a leader who plans. It is where pay to win is most true.
Most disappointment comes from a mismatch. A casual player who buys like a competitor feels cheated. A competitor who plays like a casual player feels stuck. Decide first, then spend.
Our verdict
Evony is pay to win at the top, pay to progress faster in the middle, and playable at the bottom. If you want a Major league alliance, you will need money and organisation. If you want to enjoy the game with friends, you will not. Be honest about which one you want, and set your budget from there.
For spenders and alliance leaders
What to buy, or save, before the next event. If you spend, pick the one goal that matters for your role. Rally leaders need top generals and troops. Joiners need healing and speed. Do not buy for a role you do not play.
What to tell the alliance. New members ask this question in the first week. Answer plainly: "You can play free. Spending makes you faster. Here is a plan." Then link them to our spending plan by budget.
Timing. Buy before the event, never during the last day. And never buy to chase a loss in a single battle.
