Your fleet is only as good as its mix. Two accounts with the same Power can get very different results depending on which ship types they run and against what. Here is what each type does, what it beats, and what to build first. For the Flagship build itself, see our Flagship formation guide.

Which damage ship to build first

  1. Artillery. Most fights are fleet against fleet, and Artillery hits several ships at once.
  2. Cutthroat. It covers what Artillery cannot: sea monsters and a tanky enemy Flagship.
  3. Support once you reach Season 3.
  4. Drowning, Blaze or Strategic, in the order your hero roster supports.

Match heroes to the ship. Check each hero's ship type on the hero screen, then pick from the current S tier on our hero tier list.

Ship designs: the early ladder

You field your Flagship plus up to five more ships, adding new designs over time. Pocket Gamer ranks the early designs from best to worst: Flagship, Warhammer, Fearless Princess, Crimson Sentinel, Black Raven, Dragon Lance. They are mostly straight stat upgrades of each other. Black Raven ranks above Dragon Lance only because you own it longer, so it has more upgrades (Pocket Gamer). New seasons add new designs, so check your shipyard for what is available now.

Parts and crew

  • Parts: sails, wheel, cannons and figurehead. Swap and enhance them to raise stats like damage and speed.
  • Sets: AllClash says to pick the set bonus first, then parts with the right main stat and two fitting sub-stats.
  • Crew roles: captain, first mate and gunner. A hero in their marked role gets an extra stat boost. Jack-of-all-trades heroes can fill any seat.
  • Ship abilities: fire on their own in open-sea combat and can be triggered by hand in single ship battles.

Counters in practice

  • Enemy runs many ships? Lead with Artillery.
  • Enemy has one huge Flagship? Cutthroat burst, backed by Drowning to cut through armor.
  • Sea monster or raid boss? Cutthroat and Blaze. Artillery wastes its area damage on one target.
  • Long fight expected? Blaze and Drowning get stronger the longer it runs.

Keeping every ship alive

Ship type means nothing if the ship sinks before it fires. Three things keep a ship at sea: crew, supplies and morale. Lose too many crew and the ship sinks. Low supplies drop morale and sailors start to leave. Low morale cuts speed and battle power (Pocket Gamer). Refill at port before a big fight, and keep the Galley cooking so supplies stay up.

Your Flagship also matters for every other ship. It is the only ship upgraded like a base, and the fleet ships are upgraded after it. A weak Flagship holds the whole fleet back, whatever the mix. Put Flagship upgrades ahead of any new side ship.

For spenders and Gang leaders

  • Spend on the Flagship first. It sets the ceiling for every other ship.
  • Do not build a new design with empty hero slots. A new hull with weak heroes adds little. Finish the heroes first.
  • Split types across the Gang. If your top accounts all run Artillery, one tanky Flagship stops the whole Gang. Ask your top spenders to cover Cutthroat, Drowning and Blaze.
  • Plan for Showdown. Artillery fits mid-bracket rounds against many ships, Cutthroat fits late rounds against heavy Flagships. See our Showdown o' Gangs guide.

FAQ

What is the best ship type in Sea of Conquest?
⌄
There is no single best. The Flagship comes first because it takes most enemy fire. Artillery is the best first damage ship for most players because most fights are fleet against fleet. Cutthroat comes next for single targets like sea monsters.
What is the difference between Blaze and Drowning ships?
⌄
Both deal damage over time. Drowning damage ignores armor but takes longer to take effect. Blaze relies only on damage over time and suits long battles and high-armor targets like sea monsters.
When do Support ships matter in Sea of Conquest?
⌄
From Season 3 on, per AllClash. A Support ship gives benefits to every ship in the fleet instead of dealing damage itself.
