Last Z Formation Guide: Best Squad Lineup for Competitive Accounts

May 12, 2026

A Last Z formation is not a lineup of your five strongest heroes. It is a system: five specific heroes filling specific roles within a faction framework, each providing passives and bonuses that only reach full value when the other four are correctly positioned alongside them.

The accounts that understand this build formations that compound across seasons. The ones that don’t end up with five individually strong heroes that collectively underperform because the faction bonus is incomplete, the damage resistance pairing is inactive, or the front and back row assignments are wrong.

This guide covers the Last Z formation system from first principles through Season 4, front row versus back row logic, the faction deployment bonus and why it makes five same-faction heroes non-negotiable at the competitive level, optimal Blood Rose and Wings of Dawn lineups at each season stage, and the specific pairings that unlock the capabilities most accounts leave dormant.

The Last Z formation system: how it actually works...

Every Last Z formation deploys five heroes across two rows. The front row holds two positions. The back row holds three. The tags on each hero: “strong defense” or “strong DPS”, determine which row they belong in. Defense-type heroes anchor the front row. DPS and attack-type heroes occupy the back row. Running an attack-type hero in the front row or a defense-type hero in the back row misaligns the entire formation’s performance.

The front row’s job is to absorb contact. Front-row heroes need HP and defense to survive the initial collision and protect the back row long enough for damage to accumulate. When front-row heroes fall early, the back row is exposed and the engagement resolves against you faster than your damage can swing it back.

The back row’s job is to deal damage while the front row holds. Back-row heroes need attack output, skill damage multipliers, and the passives that compound the formation’s offensive pressure across the full engagement window.

The faction deployment bonus is the multiplier that makes choosing five heroes from the same faction better than the strongest five heroes regardless of faction. Each same-faction hero deployed adds five percent troop attack and five percent troop defense. Five same-faction heroes add ten percent troop capacity on top.

At maximum deployment, five heroes all from the same faction, the formation is running with a twenty-five percent combined ATK/DEF bonus and ten percent more soldiers in every march than a formation that doesn’t activate it. This is not a marginal bonus. A formation running at full faction deployment performs at a structurally different level across every activity where troop count and troop stats determine outcomes.

Last Z Blood Rose formation (optimal lineups by season)

Blood Rose is the most common faction in Last Z, approximately 70% of servers. The formation below represents the ideal lineup at each season transition for serious Blood Rose accounts.

Pre-Season 1: The formation runs whatever S-rarity Blood Rose heroes are available. Katrina and Sophia are the primary back-row heroes. The priority at this stage is getting to full orange lineup as fast as possible.

Season 1 formation: Front row: Oliveira and secondary defender; back row: Selena, Katrina, Sophia. Selena’s passive Assaulter damage bonus activates for the whole formation regardless of deployment. Oliveira in the fifth slot activates the full faction deployment bonus.

Season 2 formation: Front row: Bella and Oliveira; back row: Selena, Katrina, Sophia. Bella’s entry transforms the formation’s defensive profile: fifteen percent more Assaulter HP, twenty-five percent more Assaulter damage from her third skill, and ten percent formation-wide HP bonus from her fourth skill at full deployment. All five Blood Rose. Full Bella HP passives.

Season 3 formation: Front row: Bella and Oliveira; back row: Selena, Licia, Katrina or Sophia. Licia replaces Katrina or Sophia in the back row. Her troop capacity and hero stat scaling add to the formation, and the Bella-Licia deployment activates 7.5% damage resistance. This is the standard top-tier Blood Rose lineup at Season 3.

Season 4 formation: Front row: Bella and Oliveira; back row: Selena, Licia, Yu Chan (S4). Yu Chan replaces Katrina or Sophia as they graduate to secondary formation duty. Her twenty-four percent skill damage increase is the formation’s new offensive ceiling. The full deployment bonus, Bella’s HP passives, Licia’s damage resistance pairing, and Yu Chan’s skill damage multiplier all stack simultaneously.

Last Z Wings of Dawn formation (optimal lineups by season)

Season 1 formation: Front row: Laura and secondary WoD defender; back row: Scarlett, Amelia, secondary WoD DPS. Laura’s radar passive funds daily EXP. Scarlett’s training speed passive accelerates Shooter rebuild.

Season 2 formation: Front row: Laura and Alma; back row: Scarlett, Amelia, secondary WoD DPS. Alma enters as the second front-row defender. Fifteen percent more Shooter HP and formation-wide HP bonus at full deployment.

Season 3 formation: Front row: Laura and Alma; back row: Scarlett, Liliana, Amelia. Liliana enters the back row. The Alma-Liliana pairing activates 7.5% damage resistance. Liliana’s troop capacity additions and hero stat scaling compound on top of Alma’s HP bonuses.

Season 4 formation: Front row: Laura and Alma; back row: Scarlett, Liliana, Queenie (S4). Queenie replaces Amelia. Her skill damage multiplier and faction matchup reshaping represents the WoD Season 4 offensive ceiling.

Formation power (the mechanics that most accounts get wrong)

Front-back row assignment errors are the most common formation mistake. Attack-type heroes in the front row, most often Oliveira or Scarlett placed incorrectly as “tanks”, reduce formation survivability because those heroes are neither built nor statted for contact absorption. Defense-type heroes in the back row waste their defensive passives and leave the front row without durability.

Off-faction heroes in the fifth slot are the second most common mistake. The ten percent troop capacity bonus at full faction deployment requires all five heroes from the same faction. Running four Blood Rose heroes and one off-faction hero for any reason forfeits both the fifth five-percent ATK/DEF increment and the entire troop capacity bonus. At the gear and star levels where whale accounts operate, ten percent more soldiers per march is a real performance gap.

Damage resistance pairings inactive is the most costly invisible mistake. Licia and Bella must be in the same formation for the 7.5% Blood Rose damage resistance to activate. Alma and Liliana must be in the same formation for the 7.5% WoD damage resistance to activate. Both heroes built but run in different formations means zero damage resistance. Not a reduced version, none at all.

Gear mismatches compound the front-back row errors. Defense heroes in the front row need armor built first. Attack heroes in the back row need weapon built first. An Alma or Laura geared weapon-first is a front-row hero whose survivability is under-invested. An Oliveira or Scarlett geared armor-first is a back-row hero whose damage output is under-invested.

A formation that activates all its bonuses outperforms one that doesn't, regardless of how much was spent on either...

The faction deployment bonus, the damage resistance pairings, and the front-back row assignments are all free performance. They don't cost Gold Bars. They cost understanding the system and setting up the formation correctly. For accounts already spending at a serious level, activating everything already built is the highest-leverage move available before the next event.

Multiple formations and how to allocate heroes across them...

Serious accounts at HQ 25 and above typically have access to multiple formation slots for different activity types. The hierarchy for hero allocation is straightforward: the primary combat formation, the one used for SvS operations, Versus Day pushes, and kill event offensive marches, gets the best-starred, best-geared, and correctly-paired heroes first.

Secondary formations for gathering, zeroing Zombie Creeps, and lower-stakes activities can run whatever is left. Never deploy the heroes needed for damage resistance pairings in secondary formations when a major PvP event is active. Those marches should be in the primary formation where the pairings can activate.

For Blood Rose accounts with the full Season 3 roster: primary formation is Bella, Oliveira, Selena, Licia, and either Katrina or Sophia. For Wings of Dawn accounts with the full Season 3 roster: primary formation is Laura, Alma, Scarlett, Liliana, and Amelia. The remaining hero in each case runs in secondary formations for gathering and maintenance activities.

The formation audit for Last Z alliance leaders...

The most valuable thing an alliance leader can do with this guide is audit the primary formation of every combat-active member before a major event. The checklist is short:

Five heroes from the same faction: if the fifth slot is off-faction, the faction bonus is incomplete. Defense-type heroes in the front row, attack-type heroes in the back row: if any hero is misassigned, the formation is running below its performance ceiling.

Damage resistance pairing in the same formation: if either pairing hero is in a different lineup, damage resistance is zero. Gear priority matching the hero’s role: if a defense hero’s armor is underdeveloped relative to their weapon, front-row durability is under-invested.

Correcting these four points across the most combat-active members before every major event costs nothing beyond an informed conversation. The performance improvement is immediate and measurable in troop loss rates after the first engagement.

Alliance Leader Playbook (formation investment across your alliance)

Run a formation audit before every major event. Fifteen minutes reviewing the primary formation of each R4 and active R5-equivalent member surfaces the faction bonus gap, the row assignment errors, and the inactive damage resistance pairings that are the most common performance limiters.

The damage resistance pairing conversation is the highest-value individual member conversation in Season 3. Many members have both Bella and Licia, or both Alma and Liliana, built to sufficient stars but running in different formations out of habit or because nobody explained the pairing requirement. Correcting this costs nothing and activates a defensive improvement that would otherwise require significant spending to approach by other means.

Explain the faction bonus in absolute terms, not relative ones. Members who understand that running four faction heroes and one off-faction hero forfeits the entire troop capacity bonus, not just a percentage of it, make different formation decisions than members who understand it as “a bonus that helps.” The bonus is all-or-nothing at the troop capacity level.

Last Z Formation FAQs...

What is the best formation for Blood Rose in Last Z at Season 3?

The optimal Blood Rose formation at Season 3 is: front row, Bella and Oliveira; back row, Selena, Licia, and Katrina or Sophia. This lineup activates the full faction deployment bonus across all five Blood Rose heroes, Bella’s Assaulter HP passive and formation-wide HP bonus, Selena’s Assaulter damage passive, Licia’s troop capacity additions and hero stat scaling, and the Bella-Licia 7.5% damage resistance pairing.

What is the best formation for Wings of Dawn in Last Z at Season 3?

The optimal Wings of Dawn formation at Season 3 is: front row, Laura and Alma; back row, Scarlett, Liliana, and Amelia. This activates the full WoD faction deployment bonus, Laura’s radar passive, Alma’s Shooter HP bonuses and formation-wide HP bonus, Scarlett’s training speed passive, Liliana’s troop capacity additions, and the Alma-Liliana 7.5% damage resistance pairing.

Why does running an off-faction hero in the fifth slot hurt so much?

Two reasons. First, the fifth faction hero provides the final 5% troop ATK and DEF increment: running an off-faction hero forfeits both. Second, the 10% troop capacity bonus at full deployment only activates at exactly five same-faction heroes. A four-faction-hero lineup with one off-faction member produces zero troop capacity bonus. The entire bonus disappears, not just one fifth of it.

How do I know if a hero should be in the front row or back row?

Check the hero’s type tag in the hero profile. Defense-type heroes belong in the front row, attack-type heroes belong in the back row. For Blood Rose: Bella is defense (front), Oliveira, Selena, Katrina, Sophia, and Licia are all attack (back). For Wings of Dawn: Laura and Alma are defense (front), Scarlett, Liliana, and Amelia are attack (back).
