Short answer: Puzzles & Chaos battles are match-3. You match three or more same-coloured tiles to spawn fighters who hit the enemy straight across from them, and each colour charges the ultimate of heroes with that colour. Make four and five-tile matches for special tiles, and use the element wheel: Fire beats Nature, Nature beats Ice, Ice beats Fire.

Puzzles & Chaos: Frozen Castle is a match-3 fantasy strategy game, as its App Store listing puts it. It mixes puzzle battles with castle building, troops, alliances and a dragon.
The puzzle side is the core of the game. This guide covers the rules in order: tiles, ultimates, elements, special tiles and the mistakes that cost fights.
How a battle works
Every fight starts the same way, according to the BlueStacks beginner guide:
- Select an enemy target.
- Match at least three tiles of the same colour.
- Fighters appear from the matched tiles and attack the enemy directly across from them.
- The enemy counterattacks between your turns.
- If you lose all your heroes, the stage fails.
The BlueStacks combat guide adds one key detail. A fighter that attacks an empty space does nothing. Line up your matches so the fighters face a heavy hitter or a healer, not a gap.
Hero ultimates run on colour
Each hero is linked to one colour. When you match tiles of that colour, the hero's ultimate gauge fills. When the gauge is full, tap the hero's portrait to fire the ultimate.
BlueStacks says ultimates vary a lot, from big damage to support, but it does not list them. Read each hero's skills in the Heroes tab.
Our advice, based on that rule: look at the colours in your team before you look at the board. If your main damage hero is Fire, matching Fire tiles first charges the ultimate you care about most. A team with many different colours splits your matches across too many gauges, so pick a core of two or three colours and match for them.
The element wheel
| Element | Strong against |
|---|---|
| Fire | Nature |
| Nature | Ice |
| Ice | Fire |
| Light | Dark |
| Dark | Light |
BlueStacks says to use these matchups and a varied team to beat harder campaign enemies. Our hero tier list lists the element of the top heroes, for example Khaos as Dark, Anastasia as Fire, Maxim as Light and Guan Yu as Nature.
Special tiles
- Four-tile match: makes an explosive tile. When used, it clears a cross-shaped area and spawns warriors.
- Five-tile line: makes a tile that clears every tile of one colour when you activate it. This can start chain reactions.
BlueStacks recommends making these on purpose, because they can swing a battle. A plain three-tile match is a small move. A cross clear that lines up new matches can win the turn.
A simple routine for every stage
- Read the enemy line. Find the healer and the heavy hitter.
- Check your element against theirs.
- Match for your damage dealer's colour first.
- Build a four or five-tile match when the board allows it.
- Fire an ultimate only when it hits something worth hitting.
This routine is our advice, built on the rules above.
Common mistakes
- Matching without a target in mind. Fighters hit the lane across from them. Think about where they will stand.
- Ignoring colours. Random matches fill random ultimates. Match for your damage dealer first.
- Spending all tiles on three-matches. Set up four and five-tile matches when the board allows it.
- Using one element only. A single-element team is easy to counter. Keep a second element ready for the stage.
Heroes do two jobs
BlueStacks notes that heroes have match-3 battle skills and separate abilities for leading armies when you attack other players and map targets. A hero can be strong in one mode and weak in the other. Before you spend on a hero, check both. Summoning opens after you repair the Hero Plaza. Heroes come from banners, and BlueStacks says a 10x summon costs 9 scrolls instead of 10.
What we could not confirm
The sources give rules but no damage numbers, cooldowns or tile-count limits. They date from January 2024, and the game has had many updates since (see our update schedule). If the in-game help or a stage shows something different, trust the game.
For spenders and alliance leaders
- Skill saves Diamonds. Our view: learn the board and the elements before you chase pulls, because good play makes the heroes you already have go further.
- Build for colour. When you buy a hero pull, check that the new hero's colour fits your core. See the hero tier list for pull priority.
- Leaders: send new members this guide with the beginner's guide. See what Packsify offers alliance leaders.
