For Game of Thrones: Dragonfire players near the end of a campaign, and for alliance leaders who have to keep their group together through a Transition. Checked October 2026.
Short answer: When a Game of Thrones: Dragonfire campaign ends, a Transition remixes your world with others into a new Reign. Your alliance stays together, but your world and faction groups do not. You keep dragons, Star Ranks, Habits, keys, relics, Gold and Heirlooms. Stronghold upgrades, Reign Level, tiles, resources and House Level reset.

Transitions are the most confusing part of Game of Thrones: Dragonfire. The developers say so themselves in Dev Log #2 (October 22 2026): transitions are confusing, especially for new players, and many friends end up in opposing factions.
Players in the game's Discord were asking the same thing at the end of October, with seasons finishing in a few days. This guide puts the official answers in one place.
Reigns, campaigns and Transitions in plain words
From the official Guide to Campaigns and Transitions:
- World: the server your stronghold is on.
- Reign: a season that lasts about 8 weeks.
- Campaign: the story you play through during a Reign, also about 8 weeks. There are three so far: Heirs of the Dragon, Shadow of the Greens and The Dragon's Divide. The first two are introductory and unlikely to repeat once you finish them.
- Transition: the remix of two or more worlds into one or more new Reigns. It is usually automatic and almost always happens right before a new Reign starts.
You are most likely to transition with worlds whose campaigns end around the same time as yours.
What you keep and what resets
| Kept between Reigns | Reset every Reign |
|---|---|
| Gold | Dragon Reign Level |
| Dragons and Dragon Eggs | Stronghold upgrades |
| Dragon Star Rank and Habits | Tile ownership |
| Dragonbone, Dragonglass and Dragonfire Keys | Territory influence |
| Dragon Relics and Relic Shards | Meat |
| Breedmarks and Rarity Cores | Resolve |
| Heirlooms | House Level |
| Gold Store bonus progress, permanent third builder | Food, Wood, Stone and Iron |
| Campaign Favors, Noble Merits |
The guide warns these lists can change without notice. The pattern is clear though: anything tied to your dragons and Heirlooms stays. Anything tied to the map and your stronghold that Reign goes.
Claim your rewards before the campaign ends
This is where players lose the most. Stage rewards must be claimed before the campaign ends, or they will not transfer. Faction and Personal Goal rewards need you to reach Stronghold Tier 10 before the Reign ends, and then they arrive in your mail at the start of the next campaign.
How factions are picked
From the official Factions and Alliances guide:
- You can state a faction preference at the end of each Reign, but it is not guaranteed. The game balances populations first.
- If you are in an alliance, the alliance leader picks the faction when the new Reign begins.
- The Mercenary option places you in a random faction and gives a set amount of Gold.
- Alliances last across Reigns. Factions can change.
What changed in 2026: merges vs Remixing
Dev Log #2 explains a test the team ran from August to October 2026. Half of the transitioning players tried world merges, which kept the players you already knew. The other half used Remixing, which builds new worlds for better matchups, so you may not face anyone from your last Reign outside your alliance.
The result: merges did not improve activity or balance, and players who merged said they wanted something new. So the developers wrote that for the foreseeable future they will only use Remixing. Your matchmaking rating is based mostly on your activity and progress over a Reign, and it is updated at each Transition.
What the developers are changing next
Dev Log #2 names three areas the team is working on:
| Change | What it does | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Clearer transitions | Better info panels, faction selection screens and system messages for players in their first Reign | Not dated |
| Join alliances across factions | In the final stage of a campaign, after the fight for King's Landing, you can join a friend's alliance even if they are in another faction | Expected by early 2027 |
| Cross-world friend code event | A window of about one day where friend code limits loosen for players who finished Heirs of the Dragon and Shadow of the Greens. You can join friends but not move back to newer worlds | Being explored; to be announced well in advance |
Two rules sit behind all of it. New players should be able to start where their friends are, even in a later campaign. Experienced players should not be able to move back to younger campaigns for an easy advantage.
What players are saying
In the Discord at the end of October, some players argued that the second campaign onward is hard for free players and talked about restarting in the first campaign through friend codes. That is player advice, not an official path, and the developers' "go forwards, not backwards" rule points the other way for experienced accounts.
The creator ThexppMobile also posted a video on matchmaking in October, describing a season where the two strongest alliances landed in the same faction and the result was decided early. It is one creator's report, but it shows why the developers are focused on world health.
Your pre-Transition checklist
- Claim every stage reward before the campaign ends.
- Reach Stronghold Tier 10 before the Reign ends, so Faction and Personal Goal rewards reach your mail.
- Spend your Meat and Resolve, since both reset. Resources reset too.
- Set your faction preference, or agree on it with your alliance leader.
- Keep keys, relics, Breedmarks and Rarity Cores if you are saving for a dragon. They carry over.
For spenders and alliance leaders
- Spend on what carries over. Dragons, Star Ranks, Habits, relics and Heirlooms stay with you. Stronghold upgrades and resources do not. Late in a Reign, put your budget into the first group.
- Time stronghold spending to the start of a Reign. Stronghold upgrades reset each Reign, so speed-ups and resources do the most early on, when everyone starts from zero.
- Leaders: your alliance is the one thing that survives a Transition intact. Post the faction choice, the claim deadline and the Tier 10 target in chat a few days before the end. Members who miss Tier 10 lose their goal rewards.
- Watch for the friend code event. If it runs, it is the best chance to pull friends from other worlds into your alliance. More leader tools are on our alliance leaders page.
