Short answer: Heirlooms are the permanent upgrade trees in Game of Thrones: Dragonfire that carry over between Reigns. There are two: Dragon Growth and Realm Expansion. You buy upgrades with Runic Fragments, Valyrian Tablets, Dragon Lord Scrolls and Amplifier Seals, and your House Level, which resets each Reign, decides how many are active.

Most of your stronghold resets when a Reign ends. Heirlooms are one of the few things that stay. That makes them one of the best long-term places for your time and resources, as long as you understand the one catch: House Level.

Everything below comes from the official Guide to Upgrades: Heirlooms and the other official guides, unless we say otherwise.

What Heirlooms are

Heirlooms are permanent upgrade trees that boost your stronghold and carry over from one Reign to the next. You open them by tapping the Heirlooms icon inside your stronghold. There are two trees:

TreeWhat it boosts
Dragon GrowthDragon growth, effectiveness and dragon stats
Realm ExpansionEconomy and territory expansion

Each tree holds many upgrades. You can invest in them at any time and in any order. Each upgrade raises a stat based on how many Upgrade Ranks you put into it.

The four Heirloom currencies

CurrencyWhere it comes fromUsed for
Runic FragmentsSelect combat map monsters, such as Hedge KnightsHeirloom upgrades
Valyrian TabletsTeam rewards, such as Alliance login rewards and progressive Event rewardsHeirloom upgrades
Dragon Lord ScrollsMainly from holding Dragon Lord's Sanctums, a special point of interest you must claim on the combat map; also found elsewhereHeirloom upgrades
Amplifier SealsHolding higher level combat map nodesAmplifiers only

Notice how much of this is tied to your alliance and the map. Valyrian Tablets come from team rewards. Dragon Lord Scrolls and Amplifier Seals come from holding ground. A strong alliance that holds Sanctums and high level nodes feeds every member's Heirlooms.

Amplifiers

Each group of upgrades has a central Amplifier. Every rank you put into the Amplifier raises the stats of all the upgrades around it by the Amplifier's percentage. Amplifiers are the only upgrades that need Amplifier Seals. The rest use the other three currencies.

In practice, an Amplifier multiplies the upgrades it is connected to. So it pays to rank the upgrades in a group you care about, then feed that group's Amplifier, rather than spreading Seals thinly.

House Level: the catch

House Level decides which of your unlocked Heirloom upgrades are actually active. A higher House Level switches on more of them.

  • You gain House XP through Chapter Quests and Events.
  • House Level is seasonal. It resets at the start of every Reign.
  • Upgrades you unlocked stay unlocked. But to switch on an upgrade from a past campaign, you need enough House Level again.
  • You can buy upgrades before you reach the House Level they need. They switch on when you get there.

So at the start of each Reign, your Heirlooms look weaker than they did at the end of the last one. That is normal. Push Chapter Quests and Events early to get your House Level, and your old upgrades, back.

Mastery: the part that never switches off

Each Upgrade Rank also gives a permanent Mastery bonus. Mastery works no matter what your House Level is, and it grows the more upgrades you buy in a given Heirloom tree. Mastery is the reason Heirloom investment still helps on day one of a new Reign, before your House Level catches up.

A bug report to know about

Players in the game's Discord opened a bug thread saying their armies felt weaker after the Heirlooms for House Level 94 opened up. That is a player report, not a confirmed issue, but if you notice the same, report it through the in-game support ticket in the Throne Room.

How Heirlooms fit with the rest of a Reign

The official campaign guide lists Heirlooms among the things you keep between Reigns, next to dragons, Star Ranks, Habits, keys and relics. House Level is on the reset list, next to stronghold upgrades, Meat, Resolve and resources.

Heirloom partKept between Reigns?
Unlocked upgrades and their ranksYes
Mastery bonusYes, it is permanent per Upgrade Rank
House LevelNo, it resets every Reign
Which upgrades are activeDepends on your House Level that Reign

The Stronghold Guide makes the same point from the other side: stronghold upgrades reset each campaign, while Heirlooms carry across Reigns.

A simple Heirloom plan

  1. Pick one tree to lead with. Dragon Growth if your power comes from your dragons, Realm Expansion if your economy holds you back.
  2. Rank a group, then its Amplifier. The Amplifier multiplies what is around it, so fill the group first.
  3. Farm Runic Fragments as you go. Hedge Knights and other select monsters drop them while you clear the map anyway.
  4. Never skip Alliance login rewards. They are a steady Valyrian Tablet source.
  5. Push House Level early each Reign. Chapter Quests and Events give House XP and switch your old upgrades back on.

During the Wraiths of Harrenhal Halloween event (October 29 to November 3), players in the Discord reported that some rewards gave Runic Fragments and Valyrian Tablets. If that matches what you see, the event is worth playing for Heirlooms alone.

For spenders and alliance leaders

  • Heirlooms are where spending lasts. Stronghold speed-ups vanish at the end of a Reign. Heirloom ranks and Mastery do not. If you want your budget to count next Reign too, this is one of the best places for it.
  • Time it to House Level. Upgrades bought before you reach their House Level wait until you get there. Buy ahead if you know you will reach it, but do not expect the boost the same day.
  • Leaders: hold the right ground. Dragon Lord's Sanctums give Dragon Lord Scrolls, and higher level nodes give Amplifier Seals. Put these on your alliance target list. Every member's Heirlooms grow when the alliance holds them.
  • Tell members about Alliance login rewards. They are a free Valyrian Tablet source that many players forget to claim.
  • More leader tools are on our alliance leaders page.

FAQ

Do Heirlooms reset in Game of Thrones: Dragonfire?
⌄
No. Heirloom upgrades you unlock carry over between Reigns. What resets is your House Level, which decides how many of those upgrades are active. You need to rebuild House Level each Reign through Chapter Quests and Events to switch the older upgrades back on.
How do I get Runic Fragments and Valyrian Tablets?
⌄
The official guide says Runic Fragments drop from select combat map monsters such as Hedge Knights. Valyrian Tablets come from team rewards like Alliance login rewards and progressive Event rewards. Dragon Lord Scrolls come mainly from holding Dragon Lord's Sanctums.
What are Amplifiers in Dragonfire Heirlooms?
⌄
Each group of Heirloom upgrades has a central Amplifier. Every rank in the Amplifier raises the stats of the upgrades connected to it by the Amplifier's percentage. Amplifiers are the only upgrades that need Amplifier Seals, which come from holding higher level combat map nodes.
More Game of Thrones: Dragonfire credits for the same budget.
