For Last War: Survival players who already know which heroes to build and want to know exactly how to slot them, position them, and why the formation matters more than the individual hero ranking.
A tier list tells you which heroes are strong. Squad setup in Last War: Survival tells you which heroes are strong together.
The game deploys 5 heroes per formation, and the synergy between those 5 determines your outcome in PvP, VS Kill Day, Desert Storm Battlefield, and Zombie Siege far more than any individual hero ranking does. You can have the right heroes and still lose consistently because of how they are slotted.
This guide covers the best squad setup for each of the three formation types in Last War: Survival, the slot-by-slot hero positions that make each lineup work, the troop counter system that the entire formation strategy is built around, and where to focus investment to reach full squad strength.
Last War: Survival runs three squad types under a clean counter triangle. Aircraft beats Tank, Tank beats Missile, Missile beats Aircraft. Every PvP engagement is filtered through this system before hero power is even calculated.
What most accounts get wrong is treating this as a reason to build all three formations simultaneously. The math does not support that approach. Running five heroes of the same vehicle type grants stacking formation bonuses worth up to 44% effective power compared to a mixed lineup. A split investment across all three types produces three squads that are individually underpowered, none capable of performing at the level a single concentrated squad would have reached with the same total resource input.
Pick one formation as your primary. Build it completely before evaluating the second.
The Tank squad is the dominant primary formation in Season 6 for most competitive accounts. It produces the highest consistent PvP output and carries the strongest Awakening lineup in the current meta.
Slot 1 (Frontline Tank): Williams
Williams is the mandatory anchor of any serious Tank lineup. His team-wide damage reduction passive applies to every hero in the formation, not just himself. This makes him non-negotiable for PvP, base defense, and rally survival. He is the hero that keeps your damage dealers alive long enough to output damage.
Slot 2 (Primary AoE Damage): Kimberly
The strongest AoE damage dealer in the game. Her Barrage Strike fires 8 rockets of energy damage at random targets and dominates large-scale engagements. She is the first hero every competitive Tank account builds and the first Season 6 Awakening hero (Week 1). The 5-star upgrade is where her damage transforms from strong to decisive. Build her first, build her fully.
Slot 3 (Single-Target Burst): DVA
DVA is the highest burst damage dealer in Last War: Survival. Her Vortex Missile shreds priority targets in PvP before they can act. DVA is classified as Aircraft type, which means running her in a Tank squad trades one formation bonus slot for her exceptional burst output. Most competitive accounts accept this tradeoff consciously. She is the Season 6 Awakening Week 3 hero.
Slot 4 (Crowd Control): Schuyler
Multi-target attacker with built-in stun capability. Schuyler disrupts enemy formations in PvP and provides the crowd control layer that keeps high-priority targets locked while Kimberly and DVA finish them. His stun pairs directly with DVA's burst timing.
Slot 5 (Flex): Murphy or Fiona
Murphy brings reliable defensive buffs and team-wide stabilization, strongest in extended engagements where consistent survivability matters more than burst. Fiona brings Missile-type multi-target damage and is the stronger slot 5 choice when facing Aircraft-heavy servers. Choose based on your server's dominant counter.
Best Tank squad formation: Williams + Kimberly + DVA + Schuyler + Murphy or Fiona
Season 6 note: with Kimberly Awakened in Week 1 and DVA in Week 3, accounts that have sequenced Awakening shards into these two heroes first are running a materially stronger Tank formation than equivalent-spend accounts that have not. Awakening replaces the hero's 4th skill with a new, more powerful ability. Prioritize Kimberly's Awakening before DVA's.
The Aircraft squad is the second formation most competitive accounts build after the Tank foundation is established. It is the highest single-fight burst ceiling of the three formation types and runs best when Carlie is available to anchor the frontline.
Slot 1 (Frontline): Lucius
Provides energy damage reduction to the entire team. Without frontline energy protection, Aircraft DPS heroes absorb too much damage before they can output. Lucius is the entry point for a survivable Aircraft lineup.
Slot 2 (Frontline): Carlie
The only Aircraft-type tank in the game. Carlie is what makes the Aircraft formation viable at a competitive level. Without her, Aircraft DPS heroes get eliminated before they produce meaningful damage. Her defensive contribution is what enables the backline to function.
Slot 3 (Primary Damage): Morrison
Consistent physical damage with armor-piercing that reduces target defense while outputting sustained pressure. Morrison enables the Aircraft formation to maintain reliable damage across extended engagements rather than relying entirely on burst windows.
Slot 4 (Crowd Control): Schuyler
Same role as in the Tank formation. Crowd control and multi-target disruption. Pairs with Aircraft burst damage to lock targets during DVA's damage window.
Slot 5 (Burst Damage): DVA
In the Aircraft squad, DVA runs at full formation bonus since she is Aircraft-type. This is the lineup where she produces her highest effective output, and why accounts building an Aircraft second squad often find DVA more impactful there than in the Tank formation.
Best Aircraft squad formation: Lucius + Carlie + Morrison + Schuyler + DVA
The Missile squad is built third by most competitive accounts. Not because Missile heroes are weak individually, but because Missile performs best as a counter formation deployed against known Aircraft opponents, rather than as an all-purpose primary. The Missile squad with its Level 30 Exclusive Weapon is genuinely powerful. Without it, Missile is a building-toward position, not an arrival.
Slot 1 (Frontline): Adam
Reliable frontline presence with solid base durability. Adam creates the protected firing platform the Missile backline needs to operate.
Slot 2 (Frontline): McGregor
Taunt capability makes McGregor an effective damage absorber. His Taunt pulls enemy targeting onto himself, protecting the backline. The risk is that without strong defensive stats, the Taunt can become a liability. Build McGregor's gear and star rank before relying on his Taunt at competitive Siege levels.
Slot 3 (Primary Damage): Fiona
The strongest Missile damage dealer in the game. Her multi-target cluster attacks devastate grouped enemy formations and are the reason the Missile squad competes at a serious level at all. Keep Fiona alive and this formation becomes one of the strongest in the right matchup.
Slot 4 (Precision Damage): Tesla
Energy-based damage specialist whose lightning attacks are particularly effective against heavily armored targets that physical damage heroes struggle against. Tesla's Exclusive Weapon at Level 30 is the key upgrade that moves him from A-tier to the meta. He is the Season 6 Awakening Week 5 hero.
Slot 5 (Finisher): Swift
Finishes off weakened targets that survive the Fiona and Tesla damage pass. Swift ensures the missile barrage produces full eliminations rather than leaving low-health targets to recover.
Best Missile squad formation: Adam + McGregor + Fiona + Tesla + Swift
Every formation bonus, gear set, research buff, and Exclusive Weapon in Last War: Survival is troop-type specific. A 30% attack buff concentrated on Tank troops delivers the full 30% to every Tank hero in the formation. The same 30% split across Tank and Aircraft delivers roughly half that effective value to each.
This is why the squad setup decision is also an investment decision. Committing fully to one formation type means every Diamond spent on hero upgrades, gear, research, and Exclusive Weapons stacks into a single compounding advantage. Splitting investment means every resource delivers partial value across multiple systems that never reach their ceiling.

Here is the multiplier most serious players never think to optimize.
The decisions above determine how efficiently your heroes convert into squad power. There is a second variable most accounts leave unexamined: how efficiently your spend converts into Diamonds.
Most players buy through the App Store or Google Play at full retail price. For a single player, the difference is manageable. For an alliance where 15 or more members are all paying full retail independently, that gap compounds into a meaningful amount of lost efficiency across a season. The same monthly budget, routed more efficiently, produces more hero copies, more Exclusive Weapon shards, and more Awakening materials without anyone changing how they play.
Packsify routes purchases through official channels in a more efficient way than buying solo. Same packs, same in-game delivery, same official payment rails. The difference is at the system level. Your monthly investment produces more actual in-game value without touching your account, your alliance, or how you spend inside the game.
The strongest all-purpose squad setup in Season 6 is the Tank formation: Williams (frontline tank), Kimberly (AoE damage), DVA (single-target burst), Schuyler (crowd control), and Murphy or Fiona as flex. This lineup covers durability, area damage, burst, and disruption in a single formation and carries the two strongest Season 6 Awakening heroes.
Williams + Kimberly + DVA + Schuyler + Murphy or Fiona. Williams provides team-wide damage reduction that makes the formation survive contact. Kimberly is the AoE carry. DVA handles single-target burst. Schuyler provides crowd control. The flex slot goes to Murphy for survivability or Fiona for additional damage depending on the matchup.
Lucius + Carlie + Morrison + Schuyler + DVA. Lucius provides energy damage reduction for the team. Carlie is the only Aircraft-type tank and makes the formation viable. Morrison delivers sustained physical damage with armor reduction. DVA runs at full Aircraft formation bonus in this lineup, producing her highest effective output.
Adam + McGregor + Fiona + Tesla + Swift. Fiona is the cornerstone. Her multi-target cluster attacks are what make the Missile formation competitive. Tesla's energy damage bypasses physical defense. McGregor's Taunt absorbs targeting away from the backline. This formation is strongest once Tesla's Level 30 Exclusive Weapon is active.
Tank is the recommended primary formation for most competitive accounts in Season 6. It carries the strongest Awakening heroes (Kimberly Week 1, DVA Week 3), the highest consistent PvP output, and the deepest hero investment ceiling. Build Tank fully first, then evaluate Aircraft as a second squad for counter-formation flexibility.
Hero slot position determines which targets heroes engage first and which attacks they absorb. Frontline slots absorb contact and protect the backline. Backline slots output damage without taking direct hits. Running a damage dealer like Kimberly in a frontline slot exposes her to burst damage before she can fire. Running a tank like Williams in a backline slot wastes his damage reduction where it has no impact. Correct slot assignment is worth more than most hero upgrades at the same cost.
Aircraft beats Tank, Tank beats Missile, Missile beats Aircraft. In a counter matchup, the losing formation takes significantly more damage regardless of hero power or formation bonuses. Serious accounts build a primary formation and a counter formation (usually Tank primary, Aircraft secondary) so they have a viable answer against opponents who know their main lineup.
