For new War and Order players in their first weeks, and for returning players starting a fresh castle. Checked November 3, 2026.
Short answer: In War and Order, keep every queue busy, push your Castle first, then Barracks and Drill Grounds, and keep the College researching nonstop. Join an active alliance on day one for help timers and gifts. Use your new-player peace shield to grow, not to attack, and save speedups for Castle upgrades.
War and Order is a real-time fantasy war game from Camel Games. You build a castle, train troops from more than 30 soldier types across humans, orcs and elves, join an alliance and fight for the Royal City. The game has been running since 2016, so most of the basics below come from long-time players and community guides. Where a number comes from players and not from the game, it is marked.
Your first day: the four queues
War and Order runs on queues: construction, troop training, research and marching armies. An idle queue is lost progress. Before you log off, check that something is building, something is training and the College is researching.
Follow the quest arrow early. Quests hand out most of your starting resources, and the quest button takes you straight to the next goal.
What to upgrade first
- Castle. It caps every other building, so it is your real level. Later Castle upgrades take days, which is why experienced players save their long speedups for it.
- Barracks. Higher Barracks levels unlock stronger troop tiers. You cannot train in a Barracks while it upgrades, so stagger them if you have more than one.
- Drill Grounds. They raise your army size. Community guides rank them right after Barracks.
- College. Keep it researching all the time. Players report the Legion research in the Military branch gives you a second army, which doubles what you can gather or hunt.
- Hospital and Depot. The Hospital saves wounded troops when you defend. The Depot protects part of your resources from raids, and more as it levels.
Resources: food, wood, stone and iron
- Food and wood go into troops, and wood also into buildings.
- Stone goes into buildings and defenses.
- Iron is mostly for high-level troops, so you need less of it early.
Keep resource items in your bag unopened until you need them. Players report that opened resources sitting in your castle can be raided, while items in the bag are safe. Gather from tiles on the world map with spare armies, and check that a tile is free before you march.
The peace shield and your first fights
New castles start with a peace shield. While it is up, nobody can scout or attack you, and you cannot attack them either. Use those days to grow your Castle and army. When it drops, keep troops in the Hospital range you can heal, and keep a shield item ready. Players report that shields from the alliance shop cost far less than shields bought with gems.
Monsters on the world map must be beaten in order, level by level, and each attack costs stamina. They are a steady source of resources and items once your army can handle them.
Your lord and your beast
War and Order has no classic hero roster. Your lord carries the equipment and skill trees, and your beast fights next to your army.
- Lord skills: one tree is for war, one for development. Most players put early points into building speed, then switch to the war tree once they fight more.
- Lord equipment: crafted at the Blacksmith from monster and quest materials. Each piece adds bonuses for your whole army.
- Beast: a single strong creature that levels with experience items, learns skills and can evolve.
Your first events
The first big individual event most players meet is Strongest Lord, where gathering, training and killing monsters score points, followed by an enemy-killing stage. Older community guides say it opens about a week after you start, and that the alliance Crown War for the Royal City opens after about 40 to 45 days. Check the event calendar in your kingdom for the current timing.
Free rewards help too. Redeem the current codes from our War and Order codes page (codes expire, so check each one in game), and do the daily quests every day.
For spenders and alliance leaders
- Castle speedups first. If you buy packs early, pick the ones heavy on construction speedups and use them on Castle upgrades, since the Castle gates every other building.
- Time packs with Strongest Lord. Training and gathering score points there, so packs with training speedups and resources do double work when used during the right stage instead of the day before.
- Know the tiers. The US App Store list shows prices from $0.99 to $29.99. Pick the pack by the speedups it holds, not by its price, and check the shop in game for the current offers.
- Leaders: push new members into an alliance on day one, and point them to Castle, Barracks and Drill Grounds first. A full alliance of fast-growing castles matters more in the Crown War than one big castle. See the alliance leader page.
