Total Battle Best Captains: Which to Hire and Why (2026)

For Total Battle players choosing which captains to hire and level, and for clan leaders planning group marches. Checked October 31, 2026.

Short answer: Hire Total Battle captains that match your army. Cleopatra and Heimdall boost the strength of your whole army, Ramses II and Sofia its health, and Beowulf both. Add a troop-type captain like Leonidas (melee) or Minamoto (ranged), plus Carter for Crypts. Level them by attacking monster squads and players; the cap is level 600.

Captains lead your marches against monsters, into Crypts and to resource points on the map. You cannot progress without them. With 30 captains to choose from, the hard part is knowing which ones to put your fragments and experience into.

What captains do

The official help center article on captains explains the basics. Captains lead marches against monsters, to Crypts and to resource points on the map. Their Leadership, Authority, Dominance and Might are lower than your hero's, and they have three equipment slots instead of six. You still need them, because one hero cannot be everywhere.

Every captain and their bonus

Troop-type captains boost both strength and health of that type unless noted.

Best picks by goal

This is our reading of the bonuses above, not an official ranking:

• Any army: Cleopatra or Heimdall (strength), Ramses II or Sofia (health), Beowulf (both). Whole-army bonuses work in every march.
• Monster hunting: Aydae or Skadi for guardsmen, since guardsmen are the anti-monster troop. Hercules for epic monsters.
• Fighting players: Logos for specialists, who double their base attack against players.
• Clan marches: Amanitore for group marches, raids and reinforcements.
• Crypts: Carter, for exploration efficiency and Tar capacity.
• Growth: Farhad (research), Aurora (construction), Helen (food and training) and Stror (gathering).

How to recruit and level captains

Per the help center, you hire captains with fragments. Get fragments by researching captains in the Academy or using Summoning Scrolls in the Summoning Circle. Captains also show up as offers in the Triumphal Challenge shop. Pick an empty captain slot from your hero's menu; a red dot marks captains you can afford.

Captains level from attacking monster squads (not rare or heroic ones), attacking players, exploring Crypts and special experience chests. The help center says monster squads and players are the most efficient. The level cap is 600, and Doria's and Carter's bonuses stop growing after level 300, so do not push those two past 300 for their bonus.

Captains vs hero avatars

Do not mix up captains with hero avatars. Your hero has its own avatars with bonuses, listed in a separate help center article. A few that matter for captains: Thaddeus gives +25% to the maximum Leadership of your hero and captains, Svyatogor gives +50% strength and health to troops in marches with no captains, and Ryjong doubles march speed for your army, hero and captains.

For spenders and clan leaders

For spenders, captains are one of the best long-term places for money, because a captain keeps leveling to 600 and keeps leading marches. Spend in this order:

1. Fragments for a whole-army captain first (Cleopatra, Ramses II, Beowulf). They help every march.
2. Then your main troop-type captain. Match it to what you train most.
3. Captain experience chests from special offers, saved for captains you already use daily.
4. Triumphal Challenge shop for captain offers each season.

Avoid spreading fragments across many captains you will never march with. Five well-built captains beat fifteen half-built ones.

For clan leaders: Amanitore boosts group marches, raids and reinforcements, so ask your rally leads to build her. Carter helps members clear Crypts faster, which means more captain experience for the whole clan. The alliance leader page has more on planning roles in a clan.
