Let’s be real… leveling up heroes in Dark War Survival isn’t just about grinding XP and spamming upgrades.
If you want to build a well-balanced squad that can handle Adventure stages, Alliance events, and PvP fights without draining your resources, you’ll need a smart, sustainable leveling strategy.
In this guide, we’ll break down everything you need to know: how to level your core heroes efficiently, where to get food faster, and which systems give you the biggest return without wasting effort (or diamonds).
Let’s get into it…
Trying to level up every hero in Dark War Survival is a trap, and it’ll cost you millions of food. Instead, the most efficient players use the Training Center.
Here’s how it works:
Your five highest-leveled heroes automatically become instructors. Any hero you assign as a trainee will match the lowest level among your instructors.
So if your top five are level 60, and the lowest is 56, every trainee will instantly become level 56 (no extra food required).
That means you only need to invest food into your core five heroes. Everyone else can piggyback off them as trainees. Just make sure to unlock enough trainee slots (at least five) to fill two full trucks for events and campaigns.
If food is your bottleneck (and it probably is), you’ll need to optimize your income. The game gives you multiple sources, but not all are equal. Here's where to focus:
The Hunter’s Hut is your main passive food producer. Maxing it out to level 30 should be a priority early on. But don’t stop there… tap into every furniture upgrade inside the Hut to boost production even more.
Heroes like Willow, Selina, and Ruby have passive skills that increase Hut resource output. If you’re not using them in battle, just dump blue skill books into their third skill and enjoy the food bonus.
With everything upgraded, you can hit over 14 million food per day without doing anything else. That’s the kind of efficiency you want.
Your Adventure Camp isn’t just for rewards and rubies, it’s one of the best food generators in Dark War Survival. As you push further in Adventure stages, the food output per hour increases dramatically. And the best part? You don’t have to do anything once you’ve progressed.
At around stage 315, you can earn close to 2 million food per hour. Just remember to collect the rewards before the 8-hour cap or you’ll lose excess gains. If you’ve got Guy, level up his third skill, because it gives a huge passive boost to Adventure food income.
Radar events can offer major food payouts. For example, the “Clear Zombie” mission can net you nearly 4 million food in one go. The key here is progression.
Once you reach radar level 13 (which requires about 250 completed events), you unlock more event slots per refresh and better-quality missions.
Also: heroes like Catherine and Rex have a skill that directly improves radar food rewards. It’s their third skill, so upgrading it can boost your daily food haul big time.
Every time someone in your Alliance takes down a Boomer, you’ll get a Boomer Gift in your mail, and sometimes that includes food. If you’re in a dead or low-activity Alliance, you’re missing out.
The more teammates you have rallying against Boomers, the more gifts you’ll get passively each day. So if you're struggling with resource growth, switching to a busier Alliance might be the easiest fix of all.
Now that you know not to level everyone (and why the Training Center saves you millions in food), the next question is… which five heroes should you focus on first?
Smart players don’t just chase rarity or CP, they build around team balance.
A good starting point is having at least one reliable tank. You’ll need someone who can soak up damage, especially during Adventure stages or PvP rallies.
Look for a hero with high base defense, solid HP, and skills that boost survivability or offer passive healing. That’s your frontline anchor.
Next, you’ll want at least two heroes focused on dealing damage. One should be strong in AoE attacks to clear groups of enemies quickly, while the other is better at single-target burst, ideal for bosses or duels. These damage dealers will carry your output in both PvE and PvP.
The last two hero slots are flexible. Some players add a third damage dealer and go full offense. Others slot in a support hero who boosts the team’s attack, debuffs enemies, or adds utility through economy bonuses.
If you’re low on food or still building up your base, it can even make sense to temporarily level heroes like Willow or Guy, whose third skills improve resource production and gathering rates. They're not always battle MVPs, but they help you grow faster in the long run.
And of course, don’t forget faction synergy. Dark War Survival uses the classic triangle—Fighter, Rider, Shooter—so it’s best not to stack one type too heavily.
A mix helps you cover more situations and reduces your vulnerability in combat. You can always reshuffle your priorities later, but early on, balance and synergy will take you further than raw CP alone.
