Research in Age of Empires Mobile is one of the few systems where spending more does not automatically mean progressing faster. It means choosing which research to accelerate and which to let tick on timers while you push resources elsewhere.
Most research guides tell beginners to rush economic tech first. That advice breaks down once you are past Town Center 15 and spending at scale. At that point, research priority becomes a resource allocation problem: where do your speedups, Empire Coins, and alliance helps create the most power per day?
This guide covers AoEM research priority through the lens of whale spending $1,000+ monthly, where the constraint is not resources but time and sequencing.
Age of Empires Mobile splits research into two main trees at the University: Economic and Military. Every beginner guide says rush Economic first. Here is why that advice inverts at whale spending levels.
Economic research includes resource production, gathering speed, construction speed, and research speed technologies. The research speed line (Research Speed 1 through 5) is genuinely critical because it compounds: faster research speed makes every subsequent tech cheaper in time. This is the one economic branch every player, including whales, should max early.
But beyond Research Speed, most economic techs solve problems that whale spending already solves. Resource production bonuses matter when you are gathering from the map. If you are buying resource packs monthly, that production bonus is marginal. Construction speed matters when you cannot afford speedups. If you have speedups stacked from purchased bundles, the research bonus barely moves the needle.
Military research, by contrast, directly increases troop stats: attack, defense, health, and march capacity. These bonuses apply to every rally, every field fight, and every Mightiest Governor scoring phase. At whale spending levels, military tech is where research time converts most directly into competitive power.
Max Research Speed 1 immediately. This is non-negotiable regardless of spending level. Every hour saved here compounds across hundreds of future research queues. Use speedups freely on this line because the ROI is the highest in the entire tech tree.
Get alliance Embassy to max for your Town Center level. Each alliance help reduces research time by 1%. On late-game research that runs 15+ days, a full alliance help rotation can shave off days. Always wait for alliance helps before applying speedups.
Rush Deployable Troops research to unlock additional march slots. Then prioritize the unit tier unlocks for your primary troop type. If your hero pairings are cavalry, rush cavalry tier upgrades before touching pikemen or archer tiers. Higher tier troops have substantially better base stats, and the gap compounds when multiplied by hero skills and civilization bonuses.
Do not spread military research evenly across all troop types. Focus your primary troop type first, secondary second. The alliance does not need you to have mediocre everything. It needs you to have one devastating march and one competent backup.
Once your primary troop tier is unlocked, invest in the attack, defense, and health research lines for that troop type. These percentages stack multiplicatively with hero skills, gear, and talent trees. A 5% attack research bonus on troops that already have 200% attack from hero skills produces more absolute power than the same 5% would on a bare account.
This is where whale research diverges most from F2P research. F2P players spread bonuses to cover weaknesses. Whales stack bonuses to amplify strengths. Your primary march should be overwhelmingly powerful, not balanced.
Once military research is advanced for your primary troop type, circle back to economic research. Construction speed, training speed, and healing speed all reduce friction in your daily operations. These are quality-of-life improvements that matter more at scale, when you are running multiple building queues, training cycles, and hospital rotations simultaneously.
The Villager research line (boost to buildings production) becomes relevant in late game when you have hundreds of villagers generating passive resources. Before that, it is low priority for accounts funded primarily through purchased packs.
Speedups are the real currency of research progression in Age of Empires Mobile. Resources are abundant at whale spending levels. Time is not.
The biggest speedup mistake whales make is using research speedups impulsively on whatever is currently in the queue. Instead, treat speedups as a strategic reserve with clear allocation rules.
Use speedups aggressively on Research Speed upgrades. The compounding return justifies burning through your stockpile early. Use speedups on troop tier unlocks when a Mightiest Empire or MGE phase is approaching and you need your primary march at full strength. Hoard speedups during non-event periods and let research tick passively with alliance helps.
Time your research completions to coincide with Mightiest Governor scoring phases when research completions earn points. Completing a 15-day research during MGE with saved speedups converts passive waiting into active event scoring.
VIP level also affects research speed. VIP 8 unlocks 5% research speed, which stacks with your Research Speed tech and alliance helps. If you are below VIP 8, that should be a higher Empire Coin priority than most research-adjacent spending.
Research is a time-gated system that responds to structured spending better than impulsive spending. When your speedups, alliance helps, VIP level, and research queue are all coordinated, you compress months of progression into weeks.
Packsify helps alliance leaders turn the same monthly budget into more in-game power by routing purchases through official app stores with structured pricing. More Empire Coins per dollar means faster VIP progression, more speedups from purchased bundles, and a research pipeline that stays ahead of your server.
